Sweet Pomegranate memories

When I was a child the street I lived on in Las Vegas had an elderly couple that had this HUGE pomegranate tree . All the neighborhood kids were allowed to go get the pomegranate off anytime . Most of the time you could just walk up to the yard and grab them from the ground .That tree produced mass amounts . I don't know if you have ever eaten a pomegranate but when they are ripe ...Man they are juicy and sweet ..mmmmmmmm All up and down the street the sidewalks were stained with red juice ..lol That is the only way we knew to get them open . You would throw it as hard as you could and bust it open on the sidewalk .Still today that is the only way I know to get them open ,although I have not eaten one in years . Eating those are one of the fondest memories I have of my childhood summers . We would play hard then sit on the curb of the sidewalk and rest by eating some pomegranate . Last year ,shortly after buying this house we found a dwarf pomegranate bush at Home Depot and purchased it . It flowered a little last year and fruited slightly but nothing major . This year it is going crazy . I am still wondering if they are edible though . I tried looking it up on the net a few times but never found anything about eating them or not . Does anyone else grow these or atleast know if you can eat the fruit ...I am dying to try one ..lol Here are a few pics of it :

Hmmm.... never had a pomegranate so I can't answer your question! They look yummy though! We have a peach tree in our yard. It's tiny but produces a bunch of yummy fruit. Well, until this year. We didn't get even one peach. I'm hoping it was just resting and the peaches will be back next year!

Thanks for the compliments at Cyber Cooler!

I know nothing about fruit, but I hope you get everything "solved" soon! Now that it's summer, I REALLY want the good ol' ice cream truck back! ;)

  4. I still remember trying the cooking apples from my grandmother's orchard and being disappointed they were so bitter...*sigh*
Loved the idea of blood stained pavements.

  5. I'm like you: grew up resting on the curb with a pomegranite. In Southern Arizona. By the way, I like the original Daisy. But being the liberal, fence-sittin', lower-the-standards, kind of guy that I am...I like the new Daisy, too.

Is a pomegranate the fruit where you just eat the seeds? I can't remember...

Mmm. I love pomegranates. They are such a treat for me. I never thought about where they came from, so thinking about them growing on a tree almost seems magical.

you can eat pomegranates, i've never heard of a dwarf tree. they are imported into our country, usually starting at the end of august, right through to christmas. to eat them, you lightly score the outside of the fruit, pull down a section (like peeling an orange) and that exposes the seeds without too much juice leaking all over everything. they contain a natural antitoxin, anyone with a history of urinary tract infections, etc., should eat them or drink the juice everyday, it's something like 1,000 better for you than cranberry juice! that wraps up my lesson for the day, enjoy! i love them too.
